Associate Professor Ian Faragher is the Head of the Colorectal and General Surgery Unit at Western Health and an Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne. He provides care to patients in the West of Melbourne, focusing on colonoscopy, bowel cancer, cancer screening, proctology (haemorrhoids), and hernias.
Ian is actively involved in teaching and research. He completed a Masters in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality at Johns Hopkins in 2019. He is a Fellow of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ), a professional association dedicated to training, standards, research, and education.
Ian graduated with an MBBS from the University of Melbourne and completed his surgical training in Melbourne, earning his Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. He conducted research on Hereditary Non-Polyposis Colorectal Cancer and worked in the UK, where he earned his FRCS (Ed). Ian gained subspecialty experience in Colorectal Surgery at The John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford, followed by further training at the Colon and Rectal Clinic of Houston in Texas, USA.
In his spare time, Ian enjoys reading, walking his family’s mischievous dog and playing hockey.
